The Setting up of The Royal Society – Professor Michael Hunter

In this video we can observe the presentation of Professor Michael Hunter; where he discusses the cultural and scientific context surrounding the formation of The Royal Society.Based on this video and further readings what was the role of institutions like the Royal Society and other science academies in the development of science and technology as compared to a university and a library? Succinct or Concise answers would be preferrred.

The Royal Society plays important roles such as promoting science and its benefits, recognising excellence in science, supporting outstanding science, providing scientific advice for policy, fostering international and global cooperation, education and public engagement. In other words, Royal Society is in total package of advancement. Though universities and libraries share the same goal in a way, but not like the royal society that takes it to a higher levels. In addition, university & library focuses more on a publicly constituted body which promotes and reserves the norm of scientific communication while the Royal Society studies not only what is presented before them but outside the common context.

A wide array of personalities and ideas are presented in both institutions. However, there is an even greater opportunity for development and exchange within the Royal Society for its avenues are not limited to the academic set-up. Somehow, universities and libraries have stringent rules and limited resources and restricted logistics. The Royal Society provides avenues by which universities and other members of communities alike can exchange ideas, while ensuring the quality of contributions. There is also a constant call of prestige and development within the Royal Society. Up to this day, they spearhead public events, forums, conferences and exhibitions.

There is a vast array of ideas and research shared in both contexts of the Royal Society and universities. However, the Royal Society provides an international scale of development by spearheading public fora, exhibitions and conferences that are not necessarily limited to audience and participants from the academe. The Royal Society widens the connection and facilitates cross-cultural exchange of relevant contributions beyond the campus set-up. While universities and libraries have stringent rules and logistical limitations, the Royal Society is able to encapsulate and carefully examines contributions with a global lens from various institutions and individuals.

The Royal Society is a distinctive institution of scientists and researchers with an immense passion to pursue deeper into the unknown and a common goal to share useful knowledge to the greater society. They spearhead initiatives on technological developments, scientific innovations, and both empirical experimentations and theoretical researches that are unbounded by any limits.

Comparatively, universities make use of these knowledge from the highest of learning institutions like the Royal Society. They study, review, test, and experiment with the available information and from there, they make their conclusions, affirmations, and/or refutations. Furthermore, libraries serve as resource banks for students who can freely delve deeper into various subjects. Universities operate in a more linear and restricted community while the Royal Society dives into the seemingly impossible world.

What was the role of institutions like the Royal Society and other science academies in the development of science and technology as compared to a university and a library?

The Royal Society and other science academies were the ones responsible for /providing/ the knowledge /taught/ in universities and /stored/ in libraries. If phrased, they can be called “the creators of knowledge” as they observe, experiment, and theorize observations and learnings in the pursuit of fostering knowledge particularly the Sciences. Thus in summary, Royal Society can be tagged as creators, universities as the teachers, and libraries as the storage room.

The Royal Society has been “promoting and supporting science” and “recognizing excellence” in the said field for hundreds of years now.
While universities and libraries do the same, The Royal Society and other academies go way beyond the four corners of the classroom. They provide various venues for global exchange of ideas, learning and appreciation of some of the best works in the world. The said works are being used by institutions such as universities in teaching and promoting public engagement in their continuous pursuit of excellence.

The Royal Society played an important role in establishing knowledge we have for today. Through the innovation of its members, a venue for learning things was created. With the help of their experiments, theories, discoveries, an advancement in our Science and Technology was made and placed a great impact in our society.
The information collected were put in written forms which can be found and taught in universities and libraries to be more accessible to the people.

The Royal Society created an avenue dedicated upon the development of science and technology. It garners all possible instances to improve and support higher advanced learning, comprising of scholars and enthusiasts willing to learn and contribute to the institution. Among its time the Royal Society created a good foundation/institutional structure that has been resilient ever since, embodying an example to modern society. Proper management and concrete, precise rules were maintained (i.e regular meetings along with minutes of the meeting; a catalog of members that equally relieves plans and a levy of subscriptions to pay for the public exhibit experiment.) Indeed, The Society’s made a huge impact into today’s advancement, not questioning their unimaginable project: “The museum of objects” of which what made them popular and resilient ever since.

Universities and library would probably suffice the need for the advancement in the field of science and technology, although the question for maintaining and improvements can lead to a problem and can impair possible advancements compared to what we are enjoying now.

An interesting insight about The Royal Society, one that Prof. Hunter has emphasised a lot, is about the society’s interest in acquiring a wide variety of knowledge about the universe. Their constant quest for knowledge, through experimentation and trial and error, allows them to determine the best methodologies that could be applied, at that time. Also, this quest is conducted by a large number of individuals from different specialisations that makes their studies more multi-perspective. They conduct projects, publish their findings, and even created a museum for some of their findings.

The Royal Society differs from libraries and universities, at their time, as The Royal Society is more constant and applied in its quest for knowledge. Though libraries and universities promote the increasing amount of knowledge in society, their manner of imparting this knowledge is limited to what have been published before and is confined in their own walls.

Indeed! The Royal Society has advanced and promoted the field of science in many important ways. One very notable was its’ systematic data collection. This would allow researchers easy data collection on related literature of their own fields and would also avoid redundant researches/experimentation so a certain field could advance and not just stay stagnant. It has also set standards of reporting scientific findings so researchers could be on the same page. Systematic data collection, recognizing excellent science, organizing forums, supporting/funding promising/outsanding scientific researchers, is with no doubt a very important way of advancing fields in the sciences.

” … A publicly constituted body, national in its remit, devoted to the pursuit and promotion of scientific research.” — Michael Hunter

The Royal Society acts as an avenue for the sciences that is at once open-minded and large in scope as well as rigorous in its procedure to obtain the truth. It is meticulously structured such that the society fosters an inclusive and open-minded environment to all scientific theories from members of all professions. That said, the motto of the society is “nullius in verba” (“on the word of no man”), meaning everything must be supported by evidence, repeatable experimentation, or verifiable data. This and similar academies distinguished themselves from universities, which did not provide this open-mindedness and rigor, and libraries, which was not an environment for discussion and procedure in the first place but a collection of knowledge from which to draw. Ultimately, the Royal Society provided checks and balances in a time of scientific revolution that institutions as universities and libraries simply could not.

The Royal society, as its name suggests, created a “society” which established a certain behavior/approach toward science and technology (which is accepted as the norm nowadays). They established the norm/trend in such fields, specifically in research and its process, popularizing large scale data gathering, data/research validation, and discussions (forum) of research results done elsewhere. Hence, in contrast to a university or library which collates information/data and research and passes them on to the next generation (through teaching), the Royal Society helped develop science and technology further – not only adding to the pool of knowledge but also developing the process of/attitude in studying them.
